Theater director, stage designer, and visual artist Manuel Gerst transforms Kafka's famous story «The Metamorphosis» into a poetic reflection on disability. We remember: One morning, Gregor Samsa wakes up and finds himself in the body of a giant insect. It soon becomes clear that this alien creature is an obstacle to the family's happiness. In the end, only destruction remains, the complete transformation, death.
Manuel Gerst, who has already had ice hockey players skate their lonely laps in a museum space, interprets Kafka's masterpiece in a highly idiosyncratic way.
The result is his stage coup «Die Verwandlung» (The Metamorphosis) – a mixture of radical theater, happening, and social sculpture, which will be shown at the Kaserne Basel on March 28.
The centerpiece of this work – the vermin – will be exhibited at the Museum Tinguely before and after the show. Before and after its metamorphosis.
